Metadata Assistant FAQ's

Are there any prerequisites to be aware of when upgrading to Office 2007 while I currently have Metadata Assistant installed?

Yes. Metadata Assistant should always be uninstalled first. Then you can upgrade your Office version (not just to 2007, but any Office upgrade applies here). After the Office upgrade, install the Metadata Assistant. You must have Metadata Assistant version 2.11.195 or later installed. Note: We recommend a reboot of your computer after the upgrade and install.

I had the Metadata Assistant Ribbon in my Office 2007 applications, but now it’s gone. How can I check to see if it’s been disabled?

Office 2007 has moved the location where you used to find Disabled Items. Now look here: Office Button Word Options (or Excel, PowerPoint) Add-ins Manage: Disabled Items >> Go Is Metadata Assistant listed? If so, select it and click Enable Note: You may need to Exit your Office application and re-open it to enable the ribbon.

Can the Metadata Assistant run on a terminal server or Citrix Presentation server?

Yes. The only requirement is that Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Metadata Assistant coexist on the same server. Your system administrator will have to make the necessary updates (software/hardware/configurations) to handle the traffic with many users hitting the server at the same time.

Our firm uses GroupWise. Can the Metadata Assistant be configured so that it only prompts for external recipients?

No, only Outlook 2000 and higher has this capability. The Outlook flag to only scan external recipients requires that the Exchange administrator trust our .dll to suppress the Outlook security prompt. The steps are outlined in the following Microsoft KB article.

Customizing the Outlook Security Features Administrative Package

During installation, the install wizard indicates that the file is not a supported Windows file?

This happens when the installation file does not download successfully. This is usually network related and can be corrected by clicking the download link again and verifying that the downloaded .exe or .msi is larger than 5MB.

What does the error "missing tabctl.ocx or richtx32.ocx" mean?

This message appears when the required .ocx file(s) needs to be updated, or is missing or damaged. These ActiveX components are used by most software applications and are present in most Windows operating systems. Occasionally the .ocx files need to be replaced because they are damaged or outdated. Metadata Assistant requires both .ocx files to run successfully.

Contact Payne Group so that we can send you the correct files. Once you receive the files, follow the instructions below to install them on your machine.

4. Click the Windows START button.

5. Click Run and type : Regsvr32.exe RichTx32.ocx or Regsvr32exe Tblctl.ocx.

6. Click OK. The file is now installed and registered in your Windows system.

Note: We recommend that after going through the above steps you reinstall Metadata Assistant.

Do we have to uninstall MA before installing an update?

Yes and No. If you are upgrading from version 1.3 (up to 1.6) to 1.8 the answer is Yes. If you are upgrading from version 1.7 to 1.8, the answer is No. If you are upgrading from version 1.x to 2.1, the answer is a definite Yes.

Can MA be installed or uninstalled silently?

Yes. The instructions differ, depending if the installation file is an .exe or an .msi.

Silent Installation and Uninstall (for EXE files)

If the executable has been downloaded to a network path called M:\Firm Downloads, the call in the script would be as follows:

"M:\Firm Downloads\Metadataassistant.exe"

Uninstalling the Metadata Assistant, requires that you reference the location of the install.log and unwise.exe. This is typically the c:\program files\payne consulting group\metadata assistant folder. The script call is as follows:

"c:\program files\payne consulting group\metadata assistant\UNWISE.EXE" /s install.log (there is a space after the end quotes and the /)

Silent Installation and Uninstall (for MSI files)

The Metadata Assistant can be installed and uninstalled silently using the Windows Installer parameters. For example, if the .msi has been downloaded to a network path called n:\mynetworkfolder, then the call in your script would be as follows:

msiexec.exe /qn /i "n:\mynetworkfolder\metadataassistant.msi"

Uninstalling the Metadata Assistant requires knowledge of the original location where the .msi resided where it was installed from. We will assume again that the .msi was downloaded and installed from the file path n:\mynetworkfolder:

msiexec /x n:\mynetworkfolder\metadataassistant.msi /qn
